African Animal Migration : Nature’s Greatest Journey

Welcome to African Migrations — a celebration of one of the most spectacular natural phenomena on Earth: the Great Wildebeest Migration. Every year, millions of animals undertake an incredible journey across Africa’s vast wilderness in search of food, water, and survival. This awe‑inspiring event is not just a migration — it’s the heartbeat of the African savannah.

What is the Great Wildebeest Migration?

The Great African Animal Migration is a continuous, circular movement of massive herds of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles across the life‑giving plains of the Serengeti‑Mara ecosystem in East Africa. Driven by the changing seasons and the search for fresh grazing and water, these herds travel over 1,000 kilometers (and more) each year — a journey that can even be seen from space.

Life & Death Along the Way

The migration is a story of survival. Every step of the journey is filled with drama and raw beauty:

  • Calving season sees hundreds of thousands of newborn wildebeest taking their first steps together.
  • River crossings, especially at the Mara River, are high‑stakes tests of bravery as herds brave crocodile‑filled waters.

Predators like lions, cheetahs, and hyenas follow in pursuit, reminding us of the fragile balance between life and death in the wild.
